
After seeing a notation on Wm DeBrahams map of Florida in 1769, John Hewitt established a sawmill to provide lumber for his work as a major carpenter in St. Augustine. Much of the lumber was used to build or repair buildings , but another part was sent to England. This was one of the earliest industries in what would become Flagler County.
